Always Visible Input Hints mini
Also known as: Automatic Inline Help
Always visible input hints are info texts or examples guiding users to fill in empty text fields correctly. They should be placed close to the text field (usually below or on the right side of it). Like the name says, Always Visible Input Hints are always visible instead of hiding them until people feel they need them. There are also alternatives to this pattern: Dynamic Input Hints appear only when the input field is selected and Input Prompt places the info text inside the text field.
Input hints are useful for instance when the questions aren’t obvious to all users, people question why they are being asked for specific info, or when there is a recommended way of giving the answer.
Input Hint should be visually different from the label so that it can be ignored if the user doesn’t need the hint. A good way to visually separate the hint from the label is to use a clearly smaller font size for it. Also a lighter color can work well, for example gray instead of black.
Get Satisfaction uses Input Hints in two different ways in this example. In the upper text field Input Hint is used to advice the user to keep the answer brief. The second Input Hint provides examples of a good and a bad answer.
